The Exquisite Hour and the Vancouver Playhouse Closure

As many of you may have heard by now, the Board of Governors of the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company announced this afternoon that the company will commence to wind down operations March 10, 2012, at the closing of Hunchback.  The Playhouse has played a major role in the theatre community’s ecology by helping smaller arts groups and community members to grow, expand their knowledge, skills and services, and progress into larger and more complex productions.

As part of the Vancouver International Fringe Festival‘s inaugural Fringe Playhouse Award, a  remount of Relephant Theatre’s 2010 Fringe production of The Exquisite Hour was to be a part of the Playhouse’s Recital Hall Series next month.  With the news of the Playhouse’s closing, it is uncertain where the future of this production lies.

The Playhouse has said that an announcement is forthcoming regarding the upcoming productions of God of Carnage,  The Cat Came Back and The Exquisite Hour. Should the Playhouse no longer be able to present The Exquisite Hour, Relephant Theatre may look into other venues and/or partnerships.  Relephant Theatre will announce any news via our website, Twitter, and Facebook page.

We would like to thank Max, Chelsea, Katie, John, Melanie, Dan, and the rest of the staff at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company for all of their support. Our hearts are with you all.

This is indeed a sad day for the Vancouver theatre community.
